What kind of shape to I need to be in for Aikido?
You can start Aikido no matter what kind of shape you’re in. Because it’s a great workout, you’ll get in awesome shape in no time.
Is it easy to get hurt?
Not at all! You’ll be training in an extremely supportive safe environment. No one wants to hurt another – and no one wants to get hurt. While injuries happen from time to time (just like with any activity), they’re the exception, not the rule.
What is a typical class like?
You’ll begin with warm-up and stretching exercises to prepare for training. The instructor then demonstrates techniques that you will practice with your partner throughout the training session.
Is Aikido violent?
No! The philosophies and techniques behind Aikido revolve around non-aggression and harmony. The moves are more of a way to become connected with your own body. We teach respect and compassion. However, if a violent situation ever arises, you will be able to take care of yourself and your loved ones.
Is Aikido for women too?
Absolutely! Women of all ages and backgrounds come in and have an awesome experience at Aikido of Nebraska. Because Aikido is a body-placement/leverage based art, women tend to progress quickly and do very well against their male counterparts.

Will martial arts make my kid violent?
Absolutely not! We don’t teach kids how to beat other people up. In Aikido, we teach kids self-defense as a tool for character development. Aikido teaches ONLY to use the force necessary to control – not destroy. They learn to respect all living things – from parents, to classmates, to pets.
What age is appropriate for martial arts?
We have programs for kids who are aged 7 years and up. We have found that the younger students tend to get frustrated with the sophisticated movements.
Could my child get hurt?
To be honest, your child could get hurt in ANY athletic activity – martial arts is no different. We have had children come to the program for years without ever obtaining a single injury. From padded floors, to proper attire, to step-by- step instruction – we do everything in our power to insure your child’s safety.
My child doesn't like sports. Will he have a hard time in Aikido?
Often in team sports, there is a lot of pressure to “not let the team down”, and to “play for the team”. But with martial arts, they can’t let anyone down. Everyone goes at their own pace. Some kids learn quicker than others, but the children who advance quickly are not valued more than the kids who advance slowly. Everyone is greatly encouraged – regardless of his or her athletic level.
Is Aikido fun?
Absolutely! We believe that when something is fun you will stick with it longer, and enjoy it even more. With all techniques and games that we do, your child will be laughing and smiling throughout the entire class. And because they’ll constantly be setting and reaching goals – they’ll want to stick with the program.
Is Aikido for girls too?
Certainly! There are just as many girls in many of our classes as there are boys. Girls love martial arts just as much, and get the same fulfillment out of it as boys do. Also, if I’ve learned anything in my years of teaching, its that girls are just as tough as boys. Many are even tougher!
